Boy hit by car while riding his bicycle; he is sent to hospital

10/18/2012

A 14-year-old boy is recovering after being hit in a car accident while bicycling on Spruce Street in Milford, Massachusetts. The boy suffered a head injury, but the full extent of the injury is still unclear. He had been placed in a medically induced coma but is now recovering. The boy was breathing when police arrived at the scene and was responsive to paramedics on the ride to the hospital.

So far, authorities have determined that he was riding alone and without a helmet. He was hit while crossing the street by a 78-year-old woman in a sedan. She was very upset by the accident, but appeared to be clear-thinking. She stopped and pulled over after the accident. She has not been charged at this time and fully cooperated with police. The accident was still being investigated.

An auto accident can result in serious injury, such as a head injury. When a car hits a bike, the bicyclist can incur injuries that require major medical expenses for immediate care as well as rehabilitation and therapy for months or years afterwards. After the police are done with accident investigation, a determination will be made as to the cause of the accident and whether negligence or distraction of the driver played a role in it.

To ensure that the victim receives compensation for medical expenses and other damages, states require drivers to have some form of liability insurance. A lawyer may be able to help maximize the amount received in a personal injury claim by presenting evidence that shows the driver as being liable.
