Man suffers head injury after falling down steps in Boston bar

8/8/2014

Falls are one of the leading causes of traumatic brain injuries, and as one young man from Ireland recently found out, these types of accidents can change a life in an instant. According to reports, the 20-year-old man was at Roggie’s Brew and Grille — located in the Brighten area of Boston — when he fell down the stairs, suffering a severe head injury. It was not clear why the underage man was allowed inside the bar or what happened to trigger the fall.

Prosecutors claim that the owner of the bar told employees to take the man outside of the establishment and call 911 after the incident. According to the charges, no one ever called 911. Instead, the 20-year-old man was found outside the bar by someone passing by.

According to police, the owner of the bar allegedly tampered with the video surveillance system in the bar, but it wasn’t clear what the tampering involved or what kind of evidence may have been altered or lost. The owner has been charged with misleading an investigator and withholding evidence in regards to the May 23 incident. He pleaded not guilty to the charges on July 9.

When a fall that results in a lesión cerebral is caused by the negligence of a property owner, there may be grounds for a civil suit. Business owners have the responsibility to take adequate safety precautions, including ensuring any areas of potential danger are clearly marked to protect their customers. In cases where a property owner is found negligent, the courts may award the victim compensation that can help pay for medical bills and rehabilitative treatment.
